Think Dirty App Review

I'm very excited to talk about the Think Dirty App since this app is something I use regularly. It makes it so simple to be informed about the ingredients in my products. I never purchase anything without checking it on the app first!

The Think Dirty app is a Canadian app that rates “dirty” ingredients (ingredients that are potentially harmful to our health and the environment) in cosmetics and personal care products. The app ranks ingredients 1-10 (10 being the worst) on the “Dirty Meter”. You can scan the bar code of the product or search the product manually in the search bar. If it’s in the database, the ingredients and rankings appear.

This app has changed the way I purchase products. I use it before any purchase I make. It has made my cosmetic and personal care collection something I am extremely proud of—and that I feel informed using.

The founder and CEO Lily Tse has very inspiring story on what made her work on this project. I highly recommend you go read about it on the app’s website.

Okay, so here’s more “dirt” (haha) on this app!

When viewing a product in the app, the overall rating is in the top right corner. When selected, Think Dirty’s “Methodology” pops up. Here the company talks about their goal to help the consumer be more informed. They also go into more detail about how and why they rank products and where the info is from.

The rankings are colour coded to make it easy to keep track. Green: Clean; Yellow: Half’n’Half; and Red: Dirty.

Each ingredient has a drop-down menu that informs you of other names the ingredient can have, usage, health impacts, explanation and sources. It also has warnings from regulatory agencies if available. I really enjoy being able to read about each and every ingredient in my products, whether “clean” or “dirty”.

A useful feature is the ability to add all your products to “my bathroom shelf” and then receive an overall rating, so you can get an idea how clean your overall collection of cosmetics and skincare are. You can also create specific lists and add products to them. I started an “ideal” list and tracked my replacement products this way, aiming to replace all my products (like shampoo, soap, mascara, etc.)  with ones that rank 0-3.

I also like the Trending section so you can see new products that have been added, and even check out some of the Monthly Clean Beauty Boxes they sell! Purchasing one of their monthly boxes is probably one of the best ways to start using natural beauty products.

I used to carry around a printed list of ingredients that I was allergic to and stand in the aisles of the store and cross-reference the ingredients list of the product I was planning to buy. Now the app does this for me, in 5 seconds! (And I don't have to look silly standing there trying to analyze a product.)

The Think Dirty App has made it easy for me to understand what ingredients are in my products. It's a really powerful tool that is educating consumers about a confusing industry.

Seriously, download it! You're going to love how easy it makes finding clean beauty products.
